News Data Experiences

Investigative and data journalism continue to serve the public good, but exist in an online attention environment governed by algorithms. Audiences, readers and communities are exposed to issues and learn in increasingly fractured ways. In-person data experiences offer new venues to meet readers where they are, bringing people together around data with playful in-real-life activities that spark curiosity and interest in published stories. In this session I’ll introduce some basic approaches to learning, examples that translate published stories into data experiences, and you’ll have a chance to practice brainstorming how you’d translate a story into a data experience for a relevant community.
